    More Information

The Koperasi Kopi Wanita Gayo (Kokowagayo for short) is the first and only women-owned and women-managed cooperative in Sumatra. Established in 2014 in Aceh, North Sumatra, Kokowagayo has been a trailblazer in empowering women in coffee while producing some of the region’s most exceptional coffees.

In many traditional cooperatives across Indonesia, women are excluded from key decision-making roles and often lack access to financial resources and leadership opportunities. Kokowagayo was founded to change that reality. By creating an all-women cooperative, they have built a structure where women farmers take the lead — not only in coffee production, but also in cooperative management, financial planning, and community development.

Beyond coffee, members diversify their livelihoods through the cultivation of vegetables and fruits such as avocados and oranges, as well as livestock rearing and compost production. This holistic approach provides financial stability while strengthening environmental sustainability.

Their Vision is to increase income and quality of life for female farmers and their families through agriculture and coffee. Practically they have 4 goals set out to achieve this. Kokowagayo aim to:

    ·       Strengthen women’s roles in coffee production, productivity, and quality.

    ·       Build capacity in financial literacy and family financial management.

    ·       Improve farmers’ knowledge of coffee production and trade.

    ·       Raise awareness around health, education, and environmental sustainability to support long-term agricultural development.

Each lot from Kokowagayo not only showcases the unique flavors of Gayo coffee but also represents a direct investment in women’s empowerment and community resilience in Aceh.
