More Information
We have once again teamed up with the Rwenzori Coffee Company, the trading name of Agri Evolve, a Social Enterprise / Profit for Purpose organisation, working with smallholder farmers in Uganda to improve quality and quantity of agricultural crops and bring about sustainable development through excellent business practice. Along with the Kyagalanyi Coffee Company, one of the longest established coffee exporting companies in Uganda, they are providing an open transparent market for local farmers. Farmers are being trained and encouraged to rejuvenate their established coffee trees, in addition to planting new ones. Harvesting and processing are being improved, and significant investment has been made to establish a modern factory in the town of Kisinga which is our base in this beautiful region of Rwenzori.
Ibimbo is a village in the southern part of Kasese District close to the border with DR Congo. Farmers typically have between 1 and 2 acres of land and coffee is their main cash crop. Our Field Officers work with the farmers in groups throughout the Ibimbo area. Farmers are shown how to improve their yields by using good agricultural practices. The quality of the harvest has also been greatly improved by encouraging farmers to only pick the fully ripe cherries. Agri Evolve arrange transport by truck to our main Wet Mill at Nyabirongo where the cherries are sorted, graded and then put on raised beds for drying over a 3 week period. Finally the dried cherries are hulled and the green beans released. Once again they are graded and sorted with the highest quality and largest beans selected for our speciality grade lots. Bagged in Grainpro lined Jute bags ensures maximum freshness. After bagging there is a 2 month long journey by truck and ship to the UK.
